With an individual Crossfit competition and a team Crossfit competition coming up within the next month, I am trying to balance my kinda-half-marathon-training with extra competition training. It may not be that obvious (ha) but my heart is really in one place..
After only doing Crossfit for two months, competing in the Crossfit Games Open was one of the best things I could have done for my self-confidence and competitive drive. When a local competition came up two months later, I was very hesitant to register since I consider myself one of the weakest, and slowest people in my box, but decided to give it a try anyway and despite the extreme difficulty, pressure, and stress, I do not regret it for one minute!
If you have thought about doing a competition before but have reservations, stop over-thinking it and just do it.
You will learn to be organized.
Packing meals for 8+ hours of sporadic activities is quite an experience. You want to make sure that you are properly fueling yourself in between events but also not eating too much to make yourself visit Pukie.
It is important to plan for all sorts of weather- our competition was showered with cold rain where a hoodie was an almost necessity. However, for the indoor events, a tank top and shorts would have been ideal. Pack more than you ever think you could eat or wear. (I love my “lunch suitcase“!)
Discover how your body works under pressure.
Remember those kipping pull-ups that you never could “get”? When the clock is running and you have 4 minutes to do as many as you can. You’ll do one. Or 12.
Remember that 95lb Clean and Jerk that you had a mental struggle with anytime you walked up to the bar? When you have one minute to do two burpees and a clean and jerk, not only will you hit your max, but you will also continue to PR on the next weight.
Your body is capable of doing so much more than you think, and in the weeks prepping for the competition or during the competition itself, you will be amazed at what you will accomplish.
There will be men there.
And halfway during their workouts they will take their shirts off. And they will have abs. #motivation
The atmosphere is less scary than it seems.
You will be surrounded by more fit people than you ever could imagine; take your typical WOD class and multiply it tenfold. Everyone is there for the same reason, and even though it is a competition there is so much love and support in one room. Coaches and athletes from other boxes will encourage you, give you tips, and you may even develop some new friendships.
People will think you are a bad-a**.
If you tell any of your non-Crossfitting friends and family that you willingly woke up at 6am on a Sunday morning to put yourself through multiple, intense, torturous events, they will likely think you are crazy.
When you tell someone that you attempted 150 14# wall-balls in 12 minutes, more than once, they may not understand, but will silently be jealous of your dedication.
Special bond with other competing athletes.
Everyone competing is doing the same workouts as you. During the Open, thousands of people across the world were doing the same WODs. You could Google any workout and find hundreds talking about their strategies, tips, tricks, suggestions. Everyone has the same moans and groans about the workouts and those outside just don’t understand.
You will develop closer relationships with those within your box as you prep for the competition together, and even closer relationships when you spend more time together outside of the normal classes.
Strangers aren’t strangers.
I took a pickle from a stranger. Only at Crossfit could this be acceptable. People leave their purses, cell phones, food, etc., lying around. Everyone respects everyone else’s property and has even more respect for one another.
You will think you are a bad-a**.
You’re doing a competition; you are one. It wasn’t until I competed in the Open that I truly recognized myself as an athlete.

Such a badass post! I’m seriously impressed that you did a Crossfit competition – and that you’re doing another! Good luck with the training. I am DYING to try Crossfit but I can’t work it in right now with running and yoga and everything else. Plus I’m reluctant to pay for a gym membership and a crossfit membership…..oh the problems we have. haha!

Clearly I’m biased towards ditching everything for Crossfit.. 😉
But you should see if they offer an intro class. Ours does free intro sessions, and there is also a drop-in rate, so some people just do it once a week to mix things up.

I 100% agree with all of this! I just completed my first comp on Saturday and I am SO stoked to do more! I’m in LOVE with CrossFit and it’s becoming more and more apparent each day!

We grow stronger by taking risks and you’ll never really know if you CAN until you’ve tried.
Put yourself out there. Even if you don’t “win,” you will have learned a lot about yourself in the process.
And the crazy part is, if it is something you were really scared to do, you won’t really care about the outcome. You will just be so crazy proud of yourself for even trying and that is PRICELESS.
Every time you take a risk, you learn something and you build your confidence in yourself!

Being super competitive, I did my first CrossFit competition only 2 months into my CrossFit journey and I had the best time ever! I learned that I had a long ways to go but I also learned I could push myself past my limits. I also met a lot of great people and didn’t die of humiliation for being a new kid on the scene. I wasn’t a hardcore athlete then and still am not a hardcore athlete now. I couldn’t do an RX comp to save my life, but my advice is that EVERYONE should to take part in one, whether it’s just your box doing an in house competition or if it’s a big, wham, bam, thank you ma’am kind of competition. Scaled/novice and/or team divisions are often an option, so find you one of those if you haven’t mastered everything yet. And if you have mastered everything… WHY AREN’T YOU COMPETING already??!!?? It’s awesome. You won’t know till you try and you don’t have to be a super beast to have fun. The community is downright amazeballs. You won’t regret it!

We have a local competition coming up in two weeks and so many from my box are doing it as their first one. I can’t wait to see how they do (myself included), just from the sheer boost of confidence standpoint! Mind you, my last competition WODs were awful and I did want to cry every WOD.. BUT.. amazing experience 😉

obviously never done a competition. now i want to. can you do a crossfit competition without being a member of a box?
Hmm… good question. I know the last one I did someone wasn’t a member of a box but used to be, so he was familiar with all of the movements, etc. It’s definitely worth asking around though! I think it’s kind of like the equivalent to a race– won’t know your true potential until you really put yourself out there!
I was petrified when I showed up for my first competition in January. It really wasn’t as scary as my mind was making out to be. It was a lot of fun and I learned that I was capable of pushing myself further than I had anticipated. People will think you are a bad ass, or just crazy, but it is awesome! Good luck!

Jen I’d totally come support your bada$$ness at your competition all day long if I lived near you! I’d make a clever poster to wave around, clever cheers to shout during your events, and even hug you in your sweaty glory! Good luck on your upcoming competition!
Closest I’ve ever come to competition: Had an ice-skating recital when I was 10, and have been in numerous tournaments with my various soccer teams. Not really the same at all…so can’t offer much advice other than “believe in yourself” and know that we are all cheering for you!

I competed last month in my box’s in-box competition. It was very nervewracking. I was sad I still don’t really have friends at my box, but it does give me motivation to get stronger!

How often do you go?
i am 47 years old (48 next month) and did my first competition last saturday. masters didn’t start til 50 so i competed against mostly 20 year olds. i had a great time, PR’d my squat clean+hang clean at 125 and got 5th place! best of all, i did it with my 21 year old son!
That is so awesome!! We have a few forty-somethings doing their first next weekend.. that is so motivating and such a great role model for others 🙂
Just did my first local competition yesterday, Beast Mode Battle Central in Orlando, FL. I was in the Scaled division and there were double unders involved. Even during training, I couldn’t string more than 2 in a row without donkey-kicking and whipping myself red. But during the competition, I was able to string 5-7 together and get more than one round in the 5-min snatch/dubs station. Oh, and I PR’d my clean&jerk with 150#! Feeling sore but awesome!
My advice would be to read the division standards with weaknesses in mind, that way you know what you could develop (in enough time, eg. 1-2months) during training sessions. But be realistic; if there are more than 2 movements that you cannot do, rethink your options. It’s not worth it if you keep getting frustrated from slow/lack of improvement, rather than keeping track of progress being made.

Hi jennifer, first off I’d like to say great job for doing the competition, especially so early on. I have been CrossFitting for about a year and a half (more seriously the last 3 months) and I just signed up for my first competition next weekend January 11th. I am beyond excited. After going to a couple within the last two months just to support the athletes from my box as well with everyone, I couldn’t help but get into it and want to be out there. I have always been competitive but never thought to this caliber.
I am looking forward to experiencing all of these things as you did with your first competition. Again, great job with your achievements, I look forward to hearing about more of them.

My competition is here in Florida at CrossFit RSX this Saturday. So, being that this is my first one, I am researching on tips for what to do to prepare for prior and what to have the day of.
Id rest Thursday and Friday.. Hydrate tons those days, too.
Day of: pack tons of food. And remember to eat. It’s hard to think about while there, but need to stay fueled. Hard boiled eggs, nuts, fruits and veggies, protein shakes.
And just have fun!!
Awesome. I appreciate the advice. I plan on taking super light this week and do a lot of stretching and work on anything that needs to be touched up on. The box is suppose to be posting the WODs tonight so I am patiently waiting to find out. I am beginning to get nervous.
As far as the day of the competition, I saw at past event so have watched and the people are eating tons of food throughout the day. Everything from fruits, chicken, bacon, and everything you mentioned. I figured bringing too much would not be a bad thing.

THANK YOU for posting this! I’m doing my FIRST crossfit competition next weekend and am beyond nervous! I’m not sure what to expect at all, I just feel like I maybe setting myself up for failure. Anymore advice after you all have finished your first?

I am doing the fundamentals right now and already looking for a competition!
So much love for this post! Started CrossFit 5 weeks ago. First competition (a memorial for a Coach we lost this week) coming up on October 25th. I was elated to sign up. Now it’s a day later and I’m pooping my pants because last night another CrossFitter asked me “ARE YOU CRAZY!?” This made me feel better. Also, I laughed hard at the comment about the Men. Thanks for this!
You will do great, especially since you have an emotional reason to commit to it.

I competed in a novice fundraiser comp 3 months after I started crossfit. It was the most eye opening experience. But, the one “ah-ha” for me was how far I could really push my body. During daily WODs at my home box I really felt like I was pushing myself, giving it my all, but after competing I realize I had only been pushing myself to a certain point.
My one “fear” was embarrassing my coach or disgracing our box which was fairly new at the time.
Needless to say I completed 3 WODs- finishing 1st or 2nd in my decision and was 1st in the final WOD. Note that was the first time I had ever been on a rower. I finished 2nd overall. I was so proud. Now that was my accomplishment and eye opening experience. On a side note, but a still very important note, my 14 yr old daughter was there to experience every bit of it with me. And her seeing my dedication to a healthy lifestyle and fitness has changed her outlook on a lot of things as well as her opinion of me. I love to hear her brag “yeah my mom does crossfit”. I love on weekends when we can go head to head on a WOD. This summer is going to great…. Everyday.
So awesome to hear your story, Melinda! What I love it is that is SO much more than the actual workouts. It changes you mentally and makes you feel so accomplished. And to have your daughter share that with you is amazing!! <3
