I am always on the lookout for women who have made strength training an important part of their lives, and some of my most favorite spotlights are everyday people like me who have full-time obligations with fitness as a daytime jobs, or go to school, or working to raise a family.
But this week’s spotlight is a bit unique in that on top of balancing her career, workouts, and healthy eating, she is training to run the most eco-efficient race in the Transat Jacques Vabre, France’s month-long, 5600 mile trans-Atlantic race, considered the “Super Bowl” of offshore sailing. Her and her team have recently begun training with a Crossfit affiliate to help build upon the muscles and skills needed for efficient sailing! To prep for the November 3 launch, her current daily routine can be summarized as “Sleep. Sail. CrossFit.”

What types physical activity do you enjoy?
Crossfit, sailing, snowboarding
How did you get started in weight lifting?
About 2 years ago, in training for sailboat racing
Favorite workout or lift?
I really enjoy the strict press as upper body strength is key to my sport, I also enjoy any lift that involves the use of your own body weight, ring work and pull ups in particular
Current lifting-related goal:
To see how strong I can get!!
Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:
There is a lot of technique involved and you have to start somewhere so don’t be out off by seeing huge muscled up athletes and assuming they are the only ones who can lift. Work away at it and results come fast.
Personally I think that the human body is a machine and it is amazing what we can train ourselves to be capable of. Muscle definition on women should not be considered as being ‘butch’, its way more attractive than the half-starved images of ‘beautiful’ women we are presented with on a daily basis.
To keep up with Hannah’s progress, be sure to check out the Team 11th Hour race page !
