One of my favorite things in being a Sweat Pink Ambassador is the never-ending support and encouraging stories that I hear from other ladies. I’m not being biased because I was featured on her blog, but Kat really does have an awesome story to share. And despite her being a runner on the outside and blogging all about it (she has two half marathons coming up this year!),ย she also understands the importance of strength training, so she is at the top of my list!

What types physical activity do you enjoy? Running, weightlifting, plyometrics, strength training
How did you get started in weight lifting? I started when I was in my 20s once I learned that weights were not bad…like people always said…but helped increase fat burn and weightloss instead of cardio alone. I lost more weight with weight training mixed with cardio (went from a size 9 to being a 2 now – here’s the link to my before/after story-ย http://www.sneakersandfingerpaints.com/p/my-story.html)ย Plus it made me feel like She Ra ๐
Favorite workout or lift? I love shoulder presses! And push-ups!
Current lifting-related goal: to be able to do a 150-200 lb squat, not on the smith machine. One day.
Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try: The smith machine is good to start with to help with form for squats and also chest and shoulder exercises.**ย ย Also using dumbbells eventually helps build better form.
Any other info you want to include: I enjoy running and love training for races but weight training helps keep up the strength I need to be strong through all of the endurance work I do.
**note from Jen: Though I personally do not condone the use of the Smith Machine as you are much more likely prone to injury (http://stronglifts.com/smith-machine-squats-power-rack-free-weights/), I understand that not everyone can jump right in to a power rack! Something is better than nothing! ๐

Awesome!!! Kat you are SO cool, way to aim high with the heavy squat goal! ๐

I had about a 20 minute discussion with the BF last night about how I should word what I wanted to say there.. Haha.. Like I didn’t want to talk down about your way of lifting, but the Smith can be so dangerous! :\ Hope I didn’t hurt your feeling sor anything putting that in!!

Oh no! I should have prefaced that I have been using it for over 5 years so I know proper form, etc. Those who don’t NEED to be careful and ask for assistance to practice form before adding weight, definitely!
