Let the lifting ladies continue! This week’s spotlight is another one that I discovered from the New Rules of Lifting group on Facebook. And maybe I am a bit biased towards her and her workouts now because she has followed a similar path to me and has found her true love in Crossfit! I enjoy reading her blog and her progress since I can relate to it on so many levels, especially the physical and mental struggles that go along with it!

What types physical activity do you enjoy?
Softball, volleyball, running, hiking, walking.
How did you get started in weight lifting?
I got started lifting in high school sports (basketball, fast pitch softball, volleyball). I didn’t really know what I was doing back then, or why I was doing it…I was just told to do it. Since then, I’ve always enjoyed going to the gym…and lifting was something familiar, and I knew I could do it, so I did some weight lifting here and there, but never with much of a plan.
I finished New Rules of Lifting for Women (round 1) in August 2011. I liked it so much, that I did round #2 and finished in July of 2012. I loved the results! I loved the feeling of strong…and I loved that I just felt more confident in my skin. I was a better, more fit, less jiggly version of myself.
Fast forward to May 2013, I joined Crossfit. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. I am so hooked, and if I could do it more than 3x a week I would. I play softball 2 nights a week currently, so I am a little bit limited by that…but in all reality I can’t get enough.
Favorite workout or lift?
Most of the lifts in Crossfit are my favorite, but I feel the most bad*ss during deadlifts. MY 1Rep max is 205# which I’m pretty proud of.
Current lifting-related goal:
To do a kipping pullup. Just learned banded kipping.
Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:
Everyone has their day #1….there is nothing holding you back but yourself. You’ll be happy you started! No one ever regretted a workout! Lifting weights can be intimidating, but once you start, you’ll get it, and you’ll feel so much more comfortable day-by-day.
While in a “comfortable” relationship, I found myself at 193lbs at age 22 (enjoying lots of beer, and deep-fried foods), and decided to do something about it, I joined Weight Watchers, and lost 40lbs. I learned about nutrition and balance, and I always knew I had to stay active in order to stay healthy. It was amazing how much LESS pain I was in once I lost the weight. Things were so much easier…running, I didn’t have shin splints anymore, clothes fit better. I’ve maintained that loss for about 8 years now. One of my biggest support systems is my boyfriend, Chris and the “other” boy in my life is our dog Marley, he never says no to a run!
