(Edited 12/03/13 — televised World Champion Spartan Race is rescheduled and giveaway is re-opened!)

This year, I took a step outside of my comfort zone and participated in two different mud/obstacle runs: Dirty Girl and Warrior Dash, and had a blast, each giving me more confidence to tackle something more challenging in the future. One race I have heard a lot of hype about lately is the Reebok Spartan Race.

Spartan Race is on a mission to get you active, healthy, excited about change, and return to our ancient roots where running through woods, getting dirty, and facing adversity was part of everyday life. Our events are all about challenging today’s perception of normal.

Our events challenge the familiar, today’s perception of normal living and getting you out of your comfort zone! At Spartan Race, we do this everyday and it shapes everything we do.

Having experienced many different racing events, we wanted to make adventure racing more accessible to everyone, but do not be fooled by the word ‘accessible’, as our events have a challenge for everyone’s needs.

Spartan Race now introduces a level for everyone beginning with the entry level Spartan Sprint, intermediate level Super Spartan, the advanced Spartan Beast, and the ‘99.9% need not apply’ extreme level Death Race.

Whatever your level, Spartan Race will test your strength, stamina, and sense of humor.

The idea of the race somewhat scares me still, but I think this may be a definite 2014 bucket-list item! To prep for the races, they even have a daily WOD (workout of the day) and daily FOD (Food of the Day!)

To get an even closer look at what the race is all about, they are capturing the World Championship Race to be televised this Friday, October 19 this Saturday, December 7!

This 90-minute TV special will feature the World Championship and focus on the sport of obstacle racing. This event, the culmination of the 2013 Reebok Spartan Race Series, took place on September 21-22, 2013, in scenic central Vermont, near Spartan Race headquarters in Pittsfield. Tens of thousands of obstacle racing competitors and enthusiasts from around the world competed and winners took home $250,000 in cash and prizes. At the World Championship, top-ranked Reebok Spartan Race athletes, Olympians, and amateur athletes alike competed side-by-side.

While the idea of watching people run for hours sounds a little less than exciting to me, I think it would be inspiring to watch people compete in an obstacle race! I will be tuning in!

Ahhhh, so I attempted to do the world championship Spartan race and it was the WORST thing I’ve ever done! haha I’m a competitive crossfitter, but NOTHING could prepare me for 10 hours in the woods sliding down mud, fearing for my life, feeling hypothermic. I would highly recommend doing one in warm weather (not Vermont in late sept!) and trying the shorter distances first. This was my first ever obstacle race it was no joke. My dad did a tough mudder (13 miles) in about 4 hours, so I figured I could do a Spartan beast (13 miles)….6 hours later, I was starving and freezing and only 7 miles through! I dropped out and my teammates didn’t finish for another 4 hours. OMG. I HAVE to give it another try, I can be a failure! but definitely a shorter distance!!!!!!

Okay, thanks for making me more terrified!! Maybe I’d stick with a sprint..!!

haha, sorry…don’t be afraid, just be aware! of course, the one I did in Vermont was the world championship, it was meant to be ridiculously hard! But it truly is a test of mental and physical strength!

Spartan is the best!!!!!!! It’s the real deal. I did a Sprint and Super this year and I can’t wait for next year to do even more. Totally hooked.

I did the PNW Spartan Sprint this year. It was by far the hardest one I have ever done. I did it in 3 hours 33 minutes. The best part about the Spartan is the team aspect. You have a million people encouraging you and pushing you. You are in WAY better shape than I am. If I can do it, you can do it.

I actually did this Spartan Beast on September 21 this year in Killington, VT! Proud to say that at 43 years old I finished it. And I plan to do so again next year! Definitely check it out! Yes, it’s more difficult than you might be led to believe according to the website but you can do it. Just be prepared — bring food, a headlamp, and the will to finish. If you are determined like I was, you will finish, and you will find people to help you through.

Love the drawings in the video! After reading some comments on your blog about the longer races…not sure I’d want to be somewhere all day long trying to finish. Sprint sounds best for me, others sound super intense!

I’ve done two Tough Mudders.. one in late June and the other in September. So I’ve definitely gotten some warm and chilly weather for each. I enjoyed the one in the cooler weather much better since the sun didn’t dry the mud instantaneously! The obstacle that scared me the most was the 15ish foot jump into the water below (Walk the Plank).
There’s just no feeling like finishing one of those! I’m looking to complete the Spartan Race Trifecta in 2014.

The hardest part is signing up. Once you get there, its all about pushing yourself to the limit and having an amazing time!

These mud races really spring up like mushrooms – I participated several times, great fun, but if you are honest to yourself – it’s all about the beer at the finishing line.
